“Why would you enlist our expertise? ๐ค
People reaching out to us often only have a small piece of the puzzle. During our Coaching, we try to figure out what problem number one is. ๐งฉ
Because our expertise started in testing and quality, questions often start that way, but evolve to things much larger.
Several examples of questions:
๐ โDo we need to replace our regression test set with automation?โ
๐ง โShould we hire a tester to increase the quality of our PRโs?โ
๐ โWe had a couple of big issues in production, should we standardize our testing?โ
These are actual questions we have experienced during some of our take-in interviews. ๐
The underlying problems? ๐ช๏ธ
Too many people come and go because of low motivation and complex architectural setup, resulting in uncertainty when deploying, resulting in distrust. Testing more, faster and/or automatically is the wrong patch on a bleeding wound. ๐
Many wrong decisions are being made, resulting in huge costs. ๐ธ
Quality isnโt defined, nor understood by the whole team. In fact, there is no team and everyone works on an island to limit communication and maximize time spent working. On top of that, one person decides whatโs good enough and whatโs not after the solution is presented. This person doesnโt trust anyoneโs work. ๐๏ธ
Alignment was too late in the process, increasing costs. Increased learning about risk & value would help improve teamwork and overall quality. ๐ง
150 developers were working on software which runs on industry pipeline machines that are worked on by thousands and generate products that sell for millions. A setup which is this complex needs strong leadership, communication channels, a common vision, but rarely a standardized approach. ๐
When things go wrong and the first reaction is to blame testing, be sure that cultural issues are the underlying cause. Reactive, costly decisions like these show that people rather have the image of being decisive than actually understand the risk to the value to their organization. ๐คฏ
Not seeing the full picture and turning to wrong solutions is regrettably a very normal thing in our complex and ever-growing environments. In our capacity as Quality Coaches, we use our unique skills and the fact that weโre outside consultants to figure out the real problem. Together with you, weโll constructively identify next steps. ๐
What we offer:
Personalized one-on-one consulting in either a one-off session or a recurring retainer. We listen, ask clarifying questions, and help figure out the next steps in your complex environment. We might call out things you may not want to hear or ask you to find data that invalidates your own conclusions. We might share our own stories and how we’ve seen others succeed in similar problems in similar contexts. ๐ค
If we can’t help your particular situation, we’ll know someone who can. ๐ค
